Oxford Harlequins were formed in 1995 with the sole intention of bringing first class rugby back to Oxford after an absence of 10 years.
With the aid of a first class coaching staff, and talented playing staff they have now reached Division South West 1 for the 2003/4 season. This division such teams as Clifton, Cheltenham, Bridgwater all of whom have performed at the highest level.
The club plays an attractive form of running rugby, instanced by the fact that last season we were the highest try scoring club in the league with 104 tries, the next highest being 73.
The club is working actively with the Oxford City Council to provide a facility befitting of the club, and this is hoped to be in place for the commencement of the season.
In addition to the first team squad, we provide social rugby for a further three teams and a veterans team. On Sundays there is a thriving Mini and Junior Rugby section active at our Marston Ferry Site. We are here actively linking with the Cherwell School and the North Oxford Community at large. A new lease has just been signed with the Oxfordshire Education Authority on the Marston Ferry Clubhouse, with the sole intention of developing the site for school, rugby and community use at large.
Members of the first team squad actively coach our Juniors, and pass on their experience and expertise. This is essential, as there are very few State Schools that now promote Rugby, and without the Clubs of the city the sport could well die.
